Persoonlijke gegevens die achtergelaten worden op het net worden natuurlijk wel vaker voor advertentiedoeleinden gebruikt. ProPublica wijst er echter op dat noch Microsoft, noch Yahoo hun gebruikers duidelijk maken dat de persoonlijke gegevens ook voor politieke doeleinden kunnen gebruikt worden. Andere internetreuzen zoals Google en Facebook bieden dergelijke diensten naar eigen zeggen bewust niet aan.
Yahoo maketingdirecteur Andy Cotten legt uit hoe het werkt:
Campaigns use voters records to assemble lists of people they're trying to reach — for instance, registered Republicans that have made a donation. Microsoft and Yahoo help campaigns find these people online and then send them tailored ads.
In het artikel wordt ook Jules Polonetsky aan het woord gelaten. De directeur van het 'Future of Privacy Forum' legt uit hoe 'political targeting' op steeds agressievere wijze gebeurt:
Polonetsky recalls conversations within the online ad industry about not wanting to do things like targeting users based on donor history because all of that was considered far too sensitive and likely to alarm users and set off privacy concerns. Today, those barriers have been leapt over with abandon, he said.
