In 2008 legde Barack Obama het fundament voor zijn overwinning op internet. Intussen staat ook de technologie vier jaar verder. Zo is er bijvoorbeeld de 'Obama for America app' die aan de hand van blauwe vlaggetjes in een straat de democraten die prijs stellen op een deurbezoek aangeeft, inclusief leeftijd en het precieze adres.
Achter de app gaat echter heel wat meer kennis schuil. Door vrij toegankelijke informatie te koppelen aan allerlei bestaande kiezersprofielen 'weten' de campagneteams vooraf met quasi zekerheid welk vlees ze in de kuip hebben:
They do know if you’re a Catholic professional who owns a house and who’s registered to vote, and doesn’t vote in school board elections but tends to vote in other elections. And if you’re married, have three kids and subscribe to a lot of magazines; (...) They can start to match you up with maybe 100 sub-clusters of different types of people, based on polling, and guess – they never know for sure – what you’re more likely to be interested in. And then try to tailor some communication to you based on that.
De democratische campagne maakt ook gebruik van meer traditionele technieken. Onlangs publiceerde de New Yorker een interessant artikel over de verrassende problemen die de partij ondervindt bij het vergaren van fondsen.
